Do not be afraid of the phone out of date! 5G is coming, 4G and WLAN will still coexist for a long time

In the 5G era, the situation that the same operator owns multiple networks of different standards will exist for a long time. The multi-standard network will include at least 4G, 5G, and WLAN.

On the 26th, China Telecom released the "China Telecom 5G Technology White Paper" (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper"), revealing that in the 5G era, the same carrier will have a long-term existence of multiple networks of different standards, and the multi-standard network will include at least 4G. 5G and WLAN.

According to the White Paper, from the first generation to the fourth generation of mobile communication systems, the real-world network has gradually formed a complex status quo involving multiple wireless standards, spectrum utilization, and coverage. The long-term coexistence of multiple access technologies has become a prominent feature.

It is understood that 3GPP proposes a variety of 5G and 4G interoperability schemes, including two types of interoperability schemes for 5G SA networking and NSA networking.

The SA solution is that 5G NR directly accesses 5GC, and the control signaling is completely independent of the 4G network. The cooperation between the 5G network and the 4G network is realized through core network interoperation. The standard of the SA program was frozen in June 2018.

Using the SA solution, 5G networks can support new features such as network slicing and MEC (mobility edge computing, which can use wireless access networks to provide services and telecommunication user IT services and cloud computing functions). The 4G core network MME needs to be upgraded to support the N26 interface. Only 4G base stations need to be upgraded (such as adding related parameters such as 5G handover). 4G/5G base stations can be networked from different manufacturers, and terminals do not need dual connectivity.

The NSA anchors the 5G control signaling to the 4G base station and accesses the EPC or 5GC through the 4G base station. The NSA solution requires the 4G/5G base station to be the same as the manufacturer, and the terminal supports dual connectivity. The EPC-based NSA standard has been frozen in December 2017.

With this scheme, new features such as network slicing and MEC are not supported. The EPC needs to upgrade and support 5G access related functions. The 4G base station needs to upgrade and support the X2 interface with the 5G base station.

The White Paper stated that the 5GC-based NSA standard is expected to freeze in December 2018. With this scheme, 5G networks can support new features such as network slicing and MEC, but 4G base stations need to be upgraded to support 5G protocols.

The "White Paper" pointed out that the selection of interoperability plans should be based on comprehensive consideration of the time required to build the network, business experience, business capabilities, support of the terminal industry chain, complexity of the network, and network evolution.
