Focus on AR, Google terminates cooperation with IMAX VR camera project

Google and IMAX will no longer cooperate to develop VR cameras. According to Yingwei.com, both parties have quietly cancelled the camera development project started in 2016. A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the partnership, but an IMAX spokesperson admitted that the project has been terminated.

IMAX pointed out: "We are currently suspending the development of Imax VR cameras, and we will continue to review the feasibility of the pilot program."

IMAX launched the pilot program for offline VR in early 2017 and opened seven VR centers in major cities around the world. However, the company has closed two of its VR centers a few days ago and will decide on the future of the remaining five VR centers in the coming months.

However, Variety quoted a source as saying that the decision to terminate the development of VR cameras actually came from Google. Sources pointed out that as Google was turning its attention to augmented reality, they cancelled the project at the end of 17 years.

Google and IMAX initially announced the joint development of VR cameras in June 2016. At the time, the two companies pointed out that they would collaborate to develop cinema-grade VR cameras, supporting "the top directors and content creators today to provide the highest quality 3D 360-degree content experience for a global audience."

The two companies then began the development of cameras, where IMAX provided experience in designing high-end cameras, while Google contributed cloud-matching solutions for VR content. According to sources, the project participants have about 60 people, including contractors.

Google has previously worked with GoPro and Little Ant to develop a VR camera. The most recent result is the $20,000 VR camera Yi Halo, which captures 3D VR clips in 17 separate shots.

Both parties have always described the Imax VR camera as ambitious, designed to help users capture a more immersive 3D experience. The signs of termination of cooperation were first seen in IMAX's comments at the earnings conference, which they mentioned “final contract payments related to the Imax VR cameras announced earlier”.

Google has recently focused on providing AR applications and experiences for hundreds of millions of Android users. However, the search giant has not completely abandoned the next generation of film production technology. For example, Google researchers demonstrated advanced light field photo and video capture technology at the Siggraph conference last week. At the same time, Google hired some of the staff of Lytro, the original light field camera manufacturer.
