The performance monster Kirin 980 is coming, except for 7nm, what else?

Performance monster, full firepower

In view of the excellent confidentiality work of China, we know very little about the specific specifications of Kirin 980. The only thing that can be determined at this time is that Kirin 980 will be the world's first commercial mobile chip using 7nm process technology.

A little understanding of the chip process will tell that the smaller the process, the more the area can accommodate more transistors, which can lead to improved performance and reduced power consumption. It is reported that the 7-nanometer chip is expected to reduce power consumption by 40% compared to the 10-nanometer chip, and the chip area is reduced by 37%. Compared with the 16nm chip, the area can be reduced to 1/3, the power consumption is expected to be reduced by 60%, and the performance is improved by at least 30%.


In addition, Gizmochina said it received an official confirmation from ARM that the Kirin 980 will be equipped with the Cortex A76 architecture. The Cortex A76 is a new architecture released by ARM in June this year. It is a high-performance experience and is designed to replace the two cores of the Cortex A73 and Cortex A75 in the past two years.

According to ARM officially, the Cortex A76 is a "new architecture completely built from scratch." Compared to the Cortex A73, the integer performance is increased by 90%, the floating point performance is increased by 150%, and the overall performance is increased by 80%. Compared to the Cortex A75, the overall performance improvement is also 35%.


At the same time, due to improvements in the instruction set level, the Cortex A76 performs a "machine learning application" with a performance improvement of 400%. There is also a 40% increase in energy efficiency.

Undoubtedly, under the support of Cortex A76 architecture and 7nm process, the performance of Kirin 980 will be greatly improved. On the GPU side, there have been reports that the Kirin 980 is expected to carry the 24-core Mail-G72.

Next generation NPU

It is reported that its 8-bit computing performance ratio is 5Tops/watt (5 trillion calculations per watt), providing three scales of processor cores (2Tops/4Tops/8Tops) to meet different processing requirements of different processing scenarios. And can further improve performance through multi-core interconnection.
