John Carmack delivers a speech: Oculus Quest will be the biggest competitor of Nintendo Switch

The Oculus Connect 5 conference officially came to an end. In addition to officially unveiling the mystery of the highly anticipated Oculus Quest, Oculus also demonstrated Oculus Go's updated dynamism and upgraded social network. At the meeting, Oculus CTO John Carmack also made some comments.

John Carmack said: Oculus Quest's biggest competitor to the VR machine is the Nintendo Switch, which is also a portable gaming device.

Oculus Quest PK Switch

In terms of configuration and design, Oculus Quest uses the new Oculus Insight tracking technology, with an integrated camera at each corner and a monocular resolution of 1600x1440. Quest is equipped with a pair of 6DoF handles that sense the user's walking, crouching and tilting movements, allowing users to move freely in the virtual space. Quest follows Rift's design style and is full of technology.

In terms of price, the Oculus Quest is priced at $399, and the price of the Switch is $300. The price difference is not too big.

In terms of experience, Quest can also carry out, but it is definitely more suitable for home experience, users can immerse in the big space. The launch will consist of more than 50 best-selling games, including The Climb and Moss. In contrast, Switch can be used as both a game console and a handheld, making it easier to carry it out. Switch also has several main games, including "The Legend of Zelda: The Wilderness" and "Super Mario: Odyssey".

Carmack said: "I think Quest is a mobile gaming device that is acceptable to existing host users, not a host device like PS4. I think more people will choose Quest than PS4." Quest and Switch are inevitably competing in the market.

Oculus Go still has a selling point

It can be said that the emergence of Oculus Quest fills the gap between the entry-level Oculus Go and the high-end Oculus Rift. However, Carmack does not believe that Quest will completely seize the Oculus Go market. On the contrary, there will still be many people who insist on Oculus Go.

First of all, Oculus Go's cost-effectiveness is not necessary to say.

Second, Oculus Go has the same high "user viscosity" as Rift. Carmack said that Gear VR users usually stop using the device after a day or two, while Rift users "experience and consume a lot of entertainment time every week."

Oculus Go's user retention rate is higher than the earlier Gear VR. The specific reasons are not clear, but in theory it may be that the latter relies on smartphones, and users need to consider battery life issues.

Carmack also said that in the next generation Oculus Go, battery life will be the top priority.

In addition, Oculus Go has also adjusted for features such as frame rate, wearing comfort, and gaze point rendering. Oculus Go will also support the ability to render at the center of the point, by improving the rendering method, focusing on rendering the center area, blurring the rendering around to create a higher quality video.

The good news is that Oculus Go will support Youtube VR and enjoy more videos.

Finally, Carmack also revealed that Oculus Go will also launch the Casting feature, which allows VR users to project content from the virtual world onto another device via WiFi. This is a "great victory" for Oculus, and people will be able to share their VR experience with their friends, which promotes interaction between people.

VR will greatly promote social networking and connect people from all over the world

At the meeting, Carmack described his actual vision of social VR, and he believes that VR will bring people around the world closer together.

However, Carmack does not like to discuss the long-term vision, but based on the present, and hopes to improve the existing equipment. As for the future, Carmack hopes that the development team will be able to optimize 360-degree video more, such as achieving better frame rates and other quality details of VR devices.

Earlier this year, Carmack also announced a video playback technology designed to bring high-resolution video to Oculus Go and other mobile devices, such as support for "Henry VR" video running at 5K resolution. In short, Oculus will continue to optimize its technology and strive to provide a better experience for users.

In the VR era, we are no longer satisfied with "on-screen communication", but need "real scene-style" social interaction, such as seeing the micro-expressions and images of communication objects in a 3D space, rather than simply passing text. Or voice.

It can be said that VR has the unparalleled advantage of traditional devices in social networking - highly immersive. Putting on the head, VR allows users to no longer be limited to space constraints, but to communicate with friends in an avatar, and to share the same virtual space, this experience will far exceed traditional social.
